Whitton kicked off and immediately Hanwell’s big forwards began driving the ball into their Whitton counterparts. The opening exchanges of the game were predominantly played between the ten-metre lines with Hanwell enjoying the lions' share of possession. However, it was Whitton who scored first with Richard Daniels barging his way over from a tap penalty twenty metres out. Lions 5-0 Hanwell.
Centre Adam Sluman scored soon after sprinting down the left wing to bring the score to Lions 10-0. Hanwell scored late on in the first half on the left edge with the Lions running out of defenders, halftime score Lions 10-5.
Hanwell started to gain the upper hand early in the second half, pressing hard against the Lions try line. However, Adam managed to brake through again sprinting down the other end to bring the score to Lions 17-5 Hanwell. Hanwell replied quickly to bring the score to 17-12. With the pressure on, the Lions ran the changes with Cam, Rich and Zak re-entering the field; Zak linking up with his brother Alf in the second row. Whitton soon began to pin Hanwell in their twenty-two and from a powerful scrum number eight Beau picked up from the base and headed to the line where he was brought down just short. The ball was quickly recycled to Dec who scored on the right wing for his first try for the club, Lions 24-12 Hanwell.
Lions, thinking the game was won, let Hanwell slip through the defensive line to score, Lions 24-19 Hanwell with six minutes to go. Hanwell came thundering into the Lions half and disaster struck when hard hitting Alf Jones was yellow carded for a tip tackle. From the resulting tap penalty Hanwell shipped the ball wide and looked to have scored on the left, although the referee adjudged that it was a forward pass; the play was brought back for a penalty. From the resulting penalty Hanwell kicked the ball into touch in an attempt to ignite their strong driving maul however, the throw wasn’t straight and so the Lions won a tense defence dominated game.
