Firstly I’d like to welcome you all to our fifth annual season dinner come BBQ and to see so many turn up new and old.
Secondly there is no doubt, this has been an Annus horribilis in terms of results but also for the fact we went into a very difficult league, some would say stupidly, but after some people complained the previous year about proper games or been promoted, at least we can now say that we tried.
And we did finish 7th in the league which means we were not bottom.
I have to say though whatever the outcome, we played with our hearts and turned up for the experience… with hopefully the equilibrium restored, we can look forward and continue to enjoy playing rugby next season with fellow socialites on the pitch…. Rather than getting spanked most weeks.
Some will also know we have had a difficult time with younger players coming and going but finally through adversity we can now hopefully shine through.
We NOW have new younger and not so young (Yes!!!) joining Whitton lions and actually wanting to stay with us. We may not be as established as the other clubs but I feel we have a better cohesive hub and atmosphere.
We were founded on being a social club and although we like to dabble in the league WE ARE STILL a social club and so may it continue, plus we are still the only club nearest HQ.
I’d like to thank J.J. on getting us onto national television..... alright BTSport.... for the second time with another appearance on Rugby Tonight.
And of course there was our privilege to be picked for a special appearance with the British & Irish Lions for and on behalf of Land Rover. Just my luck I didn't make it.
With the 2017/18 season approaching I'd just like to say thank you to everyone for their effort last season and if we keep up the good work with recruitment let's make this a season to build on for the coming years. I'm proud to be a lion and hopefully you are too.
